If there is one issue that most Mancunians would like to tackle, then that is the issue of homelessness. Those that live, work or just visit the region cannot escape the plight of those sleeping rough in alleyways or doorways. Recently, however, there’s been a conscious effort to genuinely help those in need in Manchester, and the local arts scene is very much playing it’s part. At the forefront of this is The Edge Theatre in Chorlton, whose work with The Booth Centre raises awareness of these issues.

Minute Taker – Interview
One of the highlights from this year’s Refract:18 festival is the set by Minute Taker. Alternative singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist – aka Ben McGarvey – is one of those artists that often people rave about and critics pine for. He’s released two critically acclaimed albums and has composed several soundtracks for stage. Caught In The Act managed to grab some time with him and wax lyrical about stage names, independent artists doing it for themselves and our mutual love of all things Kate Bush.

Now in its second year, the Refract:18 festival kicks off this week with ten days of experiential performance, music and events, all aiming to challenge visitors to see things differently. Why The Royal Rocked in 2017
It was the year that brought me back to the wonderful world of theatre, reminiscent of that scene in Godfather Part Three where Michael Corleone stands somewhat exasperated and says “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in”. Obviously my reintroduction to the stage has been somewhat less bloody, but nonetheless, it was not a passion that I had planned to be indulging to the extent that here I am on a blog dedicated to the machinations of my good self and the arts.
